2nd Year Program 2022-2023

Terror
by Kenneth Weinrauch

Everyone is scared of something.
Some people say:
"I'm not scared,"
acting brave when others are not.
They might puff out their chests; take deep
breaths; not show fear.
Trembling and butterflies happen
right before a performance;
when seeing spiders or snakes.
Fear, common as air,
is not a bad thing.
It is just part of people’s lives.

Contention
    by Everett Lingle

People
sometimes can’t admit
that they are worse
than someone else. It can be
frustrating.
Stubborn as gray clouds that will not
rain on dry crops; arrogant as tornados ripping
trees from mountaintops, people think themselves
better at math
than someone a grade ahead of them.
No one believes what is true,
thinking, “I could get a higher test score, if I wanted to.”
Someone might think he is faster,
even though his competition,
fast as a tsunami,
has a better time.

Average
by Winston Gelardi

Most people on Earth are average;
as common
as an oak tree.
However, exceptions exist.
There is nothing special about an oak;
yet whole ecosystems revolve around it,
providing food and shelter.
It is not bad to not be special.
Ordinary people make life better.
A bus driver drives students
to classes almost every day;
one of those children
might invent a cure for cancer.

 Planes
by  Luella the Great

I wasn’t sure what my mom wanted with me and my sister at the airport, but she took us over to one of the hangers and the next thing I knew, we were cleaning two of the rental cars for the people who were going to rent them. We did not even get paid.

I really like planes. My favorite is probably a King Air, with its double engine and T-tail, or a Super Scooper, which is so big you could make a house inside. I like how they have many uses, and that there are lots of different kinds of aircraft.  Some planes are as big as boulders, while others are as small as rooms.  With a plane, you can go anywhere because there are no roads in the sky.

If I had a plane, right now, I would want to go pleasure flying, because that would probably be so refreshing and scenic.  I have never flown a plane before, but when I do, I would want to either drop off smokejumpers into forest fires or go somewhere tropical. Looking at planes is like going somewhere new and exciting.

 It's so fun meeting the pilots who fly into the airport where my mom works.  Sometimes I even get to go on the plane. When they fly, planes are like giant birds ripping through the sky.  I love planes so much and hope they will be part of my future.

“The great skill of a teacher is to get and keep the attention of his scholar... To attain this, he should make the child comprehend...the usefulness of what he teaches him and let him see, by what he has learned, that he can do something which gives him some power and real advantage over others who are ignorant of it.”

— John Locke (1632-1704), on Education
