2.5 Year Program 2023-2024

Quatrain
by Everett Lingle

I wake up to a new day
and go look in the mirror.
I see a boy ready to disobey,
and I leave with my quiver.

            Football
       by Warren Day

Towards Metcalf the leather rock
flies; intercepted by a flying
defender. Metcalf slams
the defender on fizzing
turf, like a wrestler onto a mat.
Play goes dead.
Metcalf flies to the bench
and explodes. Slamming his helmet
on the bench, raging Metcalf is led
off the field. Fans
morph into crazy monkeys.
Good Game!

Slice
      by Everett Lingle

My teammate passes the puck as
I skate down recently-glazed ice,
passing, skating, shooting.
The hard rubber puck wobbles down the rink,
like a penny pulled down a spiral wishing well.
Flying back toward my stick,
the puck reflects the light off clean ice
into my eyes.
Boom!
His skate slices my neck.
A gasp from the audience,
everyone goes silent.
No sound comes out.
I taste blood.
Helped off the ice,
into an ambulance
I breathe one last time and…

Warren
by Kenneth Weinrauch

Warren is a 6th grade student who is both homeschooled and also attends The North Fork in McCall Idaho. Warren thinks that being homeschooled is better than going to actual school because: “… it’s a lot shorter and I have more time to do stuff even though there’s a lot of homework.” Before he lived in Idaho, Warren lived in Washington during his early childhood. He has also traveled to Costa Rica and said it was nice and warm there, but: “A monkey stole my mom’s swimsuit,” Warren says.

During the winter in McCall, Warren shreds the snowy slopes with his skis and snowboard. He says: “I can do a 180 on both of them.”  Warren tends to come up with random ideas while doing homework. During an interview he had a million-dollar idea that: “…we should just set up the computer on voice to type so we don’t have to write anything down.”

        Hit and Run
by Winston Gelardi

A skinny crescent moon hangs
high in the night sky.
Saturday, August 19, 2023:
with an end in sight,
a lonely man walks on Wooley Avenue,
but the end does not come.
Instead, a car appears.
Blinded, frozen like a deer in headlights,
he panics but has no time to react.
Smack! The impact throws him
onto hard cold concrete.
Lying injured,
sprawled across the path like roadkill,
darkness surrounds him.
Paramedics arrive
and frantically give care.
Finally, lifted off the ground,
he is taken to the hospital to die.

Winston Gelardi
by Warren Day

Winston Gelardi is in seventh grade and resides in the small mountain town called McCall, Idaho. In seventh grade, Winston has an appetite and loves to eat. His favorite meal is: “When [Mom] makes pasta with meat sauce. When I go out I like Pizza [with] pepperoni,” Winston says. When he flew to England in December, Winston went to some soccer games that he enjoyed. Winston was also happy about seeing Stonehenge: “We went to Stonehenge, and it was a pretty fun car ride.” Although they took that long drive, Winston and his family could only look at it from a distance.

At home, Winston likes to play videogames: “I like playing because I can see how I do stuff,” Winston says, “Like in a Parkour game if I was stuck on a level, I would try to beat that level 'cause it’s fun to try and beat that.” When he grows up Winston wants to have a good life: “I just want to stay comfortable and play [video] games in college,” he says. Winston decided to support this future and get a job; he will know what to study once he decides what job to apply for. Winston is also an able downhill skier: “I go downhill skiing [at] Brundage every two weeks,” he says. He also likes to walk sometimes: “So when I was (walking) in autumn a big bird came almost next to me and then the dogs from my neighbor’s house chased it for like thirty minutes and couldn’t catch it.” Winston is a smart kid who anyone that’s not a robot should get to know.

“The great skill of a teacher is to get and keep the attention of his scholar... To attain this, he should make the child comprehend...the usefulness of what he teaches him and let him see, by what he has learned, that he can do something which gives him some power and real advantage over others who are ignorant of it.”

— John Locke (1632-1704), on Education
